John C. Reilly plays a concerned parent in ‘Carnage’ opposite Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster
There’s always a bit of edge to John C. Reilly‘s guys. It was certainly there in his last few movies (“Cedar Rapids,” “Terri,” “Cyrus“), but whether in his indie hallmarks (“Boogie Nights,” “Magnolia,” “The Good Girl,” “Criminal”) his comedies (“Walk Hard,” “Step Brothers“) or his Oscar-nominated turn in “Chicago,” there’s unpredictability to his characters. Reilly is now in “Carnage,” Roman Polanski‘s film of Yasmina Reza‘s Tony Award-winning play “God of Carnage.”
In the film, debuting Friday at the NYFF, Reilly plays Michael, who, with his wife (Jodie Foster), confront another Cobble Hill couple (Christoph Waltz and Kate Winslet) after the latter’s 11-year-old son hits and de-tooths the former couple’s son on a playground. An evening of intended civility degenerates and then goes disastrously awry, with both sets of parents letting the worst parts of their inner children out.
